Marjory Stoneman Douglas athletics returned to action this past week, highlighted by dominant performances from both the boys and girls soccer teams.
The boys soccer team, ranked 70th in the state, opened the week with an impressive 5–1 victory over J.P. Taravella on Tuesday, handing the Trojans just their second loss of the season. The Eagles followed that with a 1–1 draw against Cooper City High School before closing the week with a commanding 4–0 win over West Broward High School on Thursday.
Next, MSD will face Charles W. Flanagan High School on Monday, January 12, at 4 p.m. The Falcons enter the matchup with a 2–10–1 record, with their lone wins coming against Nova and Fort Lauderdale High School.
The girls’ soccer team also had a strong showing, beginning with a 12–0 shutout of J.P. Taravella to keep the Trojans winless on the season. They followed that performance with a 2–0 victory over Cooper City High School.
The Eagles will next take on Charles W. Flanagan High School on Monday, January 12, at 4 p.m. The Falcons are 6–7 this season and lost 3–0 to MSD in their lone meeting last year.
On the basketball court, the boys’ team dropped its first games of the new year, falling 84–55 to Cooper City High School and 57–35 against Cypress Bay High School. The Eagles will look to bounce back when they host McArthur High School on Tuesday, January 13, at 7:30 p.m., before closing the week against South Broward High School two days later.
The girls’ basketball team continued its strong season with a 64–22 win over Cooper City High School, followed by a 44–23 victory against Cypress Bay High School.This was the teams first win against the Lightning in four years and held them to only eight points in the second half. MSD trailed 21-15 but came back for th e19 point win rebid 14 points from Isabella Feldman and 13 points from Maddie Feldman.
Joni Van Eck added eight as the Eagles improved to 7–3 on the year and will play McArthur High School on Tuesday, January 13, at 6 p.m. They will also face NSU University on January 14 and South Broward High School on January 15.
