Marjory Stoneman Douglas held their signing day on Wednesday, and six student athletes were officially set to compete in college.
The football team signed two players: Dylan Shinn, who will attend Weber University, and Trisamu Burchell, who will attend Westminster Academy. The Eagles had a tough season, with only one win against Coral Springs High School, but both players shined throughout the season. Shin played on special teams and served as the punter, while Burchell was a defensive back.
Daria Boykin signed to play flag football with her former teammate and captain, Morgan Goldman, at Alabama State University. Boykin began playing flag football during her junior year, which was also the Eagles’ first District Championship since 2010.
Her team went on to win a second straight title during her senior year and finished her high school career with 385 receiving yards. She also had three receiving touchdowns while also pulling 70 flags.
The girls’ soccer team had Laina Engelbart sign with Berry College in Georgia. She played with the Eagles for four years and won a District Championship all four seasons. Engelbart scored five of her six goals this season and added two assists, helping the Eagles finish 12-2-6.
“I am so excited and grateful for this opportunity,” Engelbart said. “It honestly feels so rewarding after years of hard work. I just can’t wait to continue to grow as a person and play the sport I love.”
Alexander Nichols was the lone swimmer to sign and will attend Converse University in South Carolina. He is coming off a season in which he won a District Championship in the 100-yard fly. Nichols also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle before placing sixth in both events at the State Championship. He plans to major in business management with a minor in sports management.
Samara Osouna will compete with the South Carolina University track and field team after winning the 4 x 100 relay race in the District Championship. She also placed 10th in the 100 and 200 meters before taking third in Regionals in the relay along with Samanta Bandres Chourio, Alexis Freckleton and Naomi Grissette.
