Spring sports continued this week, highlighted by intense weeks of volleyball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, and track and field.
On Monday, the boys volleyball team began their season with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-21 against J.P. Taravella. The Eagles are coming off a season where they went 5-10 and consists of Diego Palacios, Wassim Elsaghir, Brody Berger, Luis Silva, Bryce Hantman, Spencer Edelman, Samuel Linares, Samuel Linares, Braxton Berger, Eric Huynh, Glauer Nogueira, James Pulimootil, Guilherme Correa, Stan Scaria, Sampsen Orlinsky, Sampsen Orlinsky, Lincoln Miller and Joel Joseph.
The Eagles will play Coral Glades in their next game on Monday, March 10, at 4:30 p.m. The Jaguars are 0-2 this year following losses against Cooper City and Coral Spring High School. They went 2-13 last year and lost 25-12, 28-26, and 25-12 in their only matchup last year.
The baseball team is 10-1 this year and recorded three wins this week, defeating Palmer Trinity, Boca Raton, and West Broward High School. The Eagles outscored their opponents 30-9. Gio Rojas, Danny Targlia, and Carter McGuinn all recorded wins, while Drew Freeman led the team with four RBIs against the Falcons on Tuesday. Bennett Gary homered in their next game before Nick Diaz drove in dour against the Bobcats.
Rojas also shined with the bat, with 10 RBIs. The Eagles will play Cardinal Gibbons High School on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Chiefs won a State Championship last year but are 2-8 this year.
The softball team played in three games, recording a 2-1 win over Pompano Beach High School. Addison Zajkowski pitched a complete game, allowing only one run and five strikeouts. Dani Rincoln had three hits, while Mia Boleen had the line RBI.
MSD then got a pair of RBIs from Antonia Nelke and Boleen in their 6-4 win over Coral Glades. Caleigh D’Agati also had an RBI, and Kaitlin Enright allowed only one earned run during her complete game before the Eagles lost 3-1 against Spanish River Community High School to close the week. MSD is 3-3 this year and will play games next week against West Broward and Coral Springs Charter before a weekend tournament starting on Friday, March 14.
Coming off senior day, the boys’ lacrosse team lost 7-3 against Miami Palmetto Senior High School. Josh Johnson, Zaid Popen, and Noah Ozan all scored, while Nate Klein had an assist. The Eagles fell to 1-5 and will play Gulliver Prep High School in their next game on Tuesday, March 11, at 5 p.m.
The girls lacrosse team won a pair of game stops and improvements to 5-3, following a 17-3 win against Boca Raton Community High School and an 8-7 victory over St. John Paul Academy. Kaitlin Irwin and Chloe Resnik led the team with six goals in the two games, while Aubrey Karen, Patricia Zhang, Amanda Bilsky, Mari Denvy, and Caroline Lamb scored multiple goals. The Eagles will play Olympic Heights Community High School on Tuesday, March 11, at 5 p.m.
In track and field, the boys team finished in third place, with the Eagles shining in the short distance. Connor Stallings won the 100 and 200 meters, while Tarig Qubbs finished first in the 400 meters.
The girls team came in second, with Samara Osouna, Alexis Freckleton, Samanta Bandres Chourio, and Naomi Grissette placing first in the 4 x 100 relay. Emiliana Anzures won the 1600 meters, Samanta Bandres Chourio finished first in the 400 hurdles, and Ysamar Pimentel won the high jump.
