
Marjory Stoneman Douglas Baseball. {954 Preps}
Marjory Stoneman Douglas had a terrific week, highlighted by a pair of nationally ranked teams.
Baseball
The baseball team is once again establishing itself as one of the top teams in the state and the nation following a dominant week with wins against Charles W. Flanagan and Archbishop McCarthy High School. The Eagles outscored their opponents 27-2 behind wins from Gio Rojas and Chase Wildroudt. Daniel Tartaglia, Peyton Jay, Andrew Sarro, and Breylynn Courtney all pitched in relief and did not allow an earned run.
Drew Freeman led the offense with a home run and nine RBIs in the two games. Matthew Toback also homered and finished with six RBIs, while Jake Rizzo, Nick Diaz, Erick Torres, and Rojas all drove in runs.
MSD then won 5-0 in their first game during spring break, defeating Santa Fe High School. Nick Diaz and Bennett Gary homered, while Tartaglia tossed a shutout and struck out 13. The Eagles are 16-1 this year and will play Jesuit and Sickles High School later this week.
Flag Football
The flag football team pitched their seventh shutout of the season and eighth victory this year following a 13-0 win over Monarch High School on Thursday.
The Eagles’ next game is on April 2 at 5 p.m. against West Boca Raton Community High School.
Lacrosse
This week’s losses came from the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams, as well as the boys’ volleyball and softball teams. The boys’ lacrosse team lost against Columbus, Boca Raton, and NSU University while being outscored 49-9.
The girls’ team played a pair of tight games but fell short 11-8 against Kings Academy and 13-12 versus Cypress Bay High School. Each team will be back in action, with the boys facing West Boca Raton High School and the girls facing Jupiter High School.
Softball
Softball went 3-1 during a tournament last weekend but dropped a pair of tight games against Park Vista Community High School 3–0 and 2-1 against St. Thomas Aquinas High School 2-1 despite strong games from Addison Zajkowski. Next, the Eagles will play American Heritage High School on April 1 at 5 p.m.
Volleyball
The boys’ volleyball team also struggled, losing in five sets, 25-22, 18-25, 25-17, 24-26, and 9-15 against Charles W. Flanagan High School. The Eagles then fell 25-16, 25-15, 25-14 against Western High School to drop to 3-3. They will play again on April 5 at 10 a.m. against Cooper City High School.
Track and Field
During the BCAA North qualifiers for track and field, Sahil Sule, Matthew Rosenberg, Cole Spinks, and Christopher Jackson led the boys team with second-place finishes. Sule, Spinks, and Rosenberg achieved it on the track, while Jackson captured his in the long jump. Their top relay team was the 4 x 100, which placed third, featuring Tariq Gibbs, Bryson Gittens, Sahil Sule, and Brandon Davis. Roberto Martone also came in third in the 1600 meters.
The girls were led by Emiliana Anzures and Samanta Bandera Chourio, winning events. At the same time, they also had the 4 x 100 relay team finish second with Samanta Bandres Chourio, Alexis Freckleton, Naomi Grissette, and Samara Osouna. Samantha Bandera Chourio had two second-place finishes, while Naomi Grissette came in third in three events, along with two relay teams and Isabella Bayarri.
