Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball produces elite talent, and several players are on display at the NCAA Tournament.
Christian Rodriguez and Jake Clemente represented the Eagles for the Florida Gators. Both pitchers pitched in one game, as Rodriguez threw in the opening game against East Carolina. After missing all of 2024 with an injury, Rodriguez finished his season with the Gators, making 22 appearances, earning the win over Jacksonville University, and also making a save against the University of South Carolina.
Clemente began the season as the team’s Sunday starter, transitioned into the bullpen, and became one of the top relief pitchers in college baseball. Mainly used as a multi-inning guy late in games, Clemente threw four innings in their final game against East Carolina. He also pitched in 21 games and had an ERA of 3.46 to earn a spot on the Second-Team All-SEC.
The hard-throwing right-hander has also had seven saves and allowed only three earned runs since April 4. Jacob Gomberg was also a teammate of Christian Rodriguez and Clemente, but did not pitch in the NCAA tournament after pitching in three games during the regular season.
Matt Ossenfort started as NC State’s designated hitter, walking three times in the game against NC State. Ossenfort, who began his college career at Vanderbilt, homered in his first game with the Wolfpack and finished the season batting .240 with 14 RBIs.
Rylan Lujo completed an incredible freshman season at Dayton University. Despite his team not qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, Lujo was named to the All-Rookie Team after playing in every game for the Flyers. He ranked third in the league in hits (85) and eighth in batting average (.366) and led all Atlantic 10 freshmen in hits, doubles (16), runs scored (52), and average. He also finished in the top five amongst first-year students in stolen bases (17), RBI (54), and home runs (9).
Chris Arroyo was an NBCA First Team All-American last year and was back playing Division I Baseball this year for the University of Virginia. He hit 11 home runs and drove in 42 while his team went 32-18 but missed the NCAA Tournament. Alex Rodriguez completed his freshman season with the University of Central Florida. The four-time State Champion did not make any starts but appeared in 19 games and recorded his first collegiate RBI against Monmouth University.
Cam Harris hit five home runs for Wingate University, while Santiago Ordonez went deep twice for the University of North Florida. Dillon Moquin and Alex Lazar each homered for their team, while Ethan Askin and Jacob Herzberg combined for nine RBIs. Brayden McCluskey and Sam Beir each pitched this year, with McCluskey earning a win against Hillsboro Community College and Beir earning two wins and saving three games.
Nikko Benestad and Mickey Case each did not appear in any collegiate games, but Benestad began summer ball with the Delray Lightning, finishing a doubleheader going 4-5 with a home run, double, six RBIs, and three runs scored.
