Marjory Stoneman Douglas had a busy week of sports, highlighted by a senior night for the girls lacrosse team.
The girls lacrosse team held Senior Night on Thursday during their 13-14 victory against NSU University. The Eagles feature a young team but honored Kaitlyn Irwin and Caroline Lamb. Patricia Phang, Mary Denvey, and Chloe Resnik all scored three. Aubrey Kasen added two, while Irwin and Amanda Blisky scored one. The Eagles also had Kasen add two assists, with Irwin, Blisky, and Resnik having one. Madison Gallagher made 15 saves in net.
The Eagles are now 6-3 this year and previously beat Olympic Heights Community High School earlier this week. They also have wins over Archbishop McArthy Calvary Christian Academy, Boca Raton, and St. John Paul II Catholic High School.
MSD is ranked 29th in Florida and 59th nationally and will close the week with a matchup against Pine Crest School on Friday, March 14, at 5 p.m. The Panthers are 5-3 this year but lost 13-8 in their only matchup last season.
The boys’ lacrosse team’s only win came on Senior Night on February 26. They are 1-7 this year following a loss on Thursday against Cypress Bay High School. MSD scored 16 goals in their win but previously only six in losses against Saint Andrew’s School, Community School of Naples, St. Thomas Aquinas, Archbishop McArthy Palmetto, and Pine Crest.
The Eagles will play Christopher Columbus High School in their next game on Monday, February 17 at 7 p.m The Explorers are 5-3 this season and won 13 games a season ago.
The baseball team went 3-0, following wins against Cardinal Gibbons High School, Miller School of Albemarle, and Bishop Sander High School. Danny Tartaglia, Gio Rojas, and Chase Wildroudt all earned wins on the mound, with Rojas and Wildroudt allowing no runs.
Bennett Gary, Jake Rizzo, and Lorenzo Laurel drove in three against the Chiefs, while Rojas and Matthew Toback drove in runs against Billy Wagner’s team. Diaz finished with a pair of RBIs in their final game as the Eagles are 13-1 this year and will face Charles W. Flanagan High School on Wednesday, March 19, at 6 p.m.
The softball team fell to one of the top-ranked teams in the state, Coral Springs Charter. The Eagles fell 6-1 despite a complete game from Addison Zajkowski. Caliegh D”Agati drove in the only run as MSD fell to 3-4 this year. They are set to play in the Orange Bowl Tournament in Miami this weekend, while the boy’s volleyball team got the upper hand on Coral Springs Charter, winning in four sets to improve to 3-1. They will also face Charles W. Flanagan High School on Monday, February 17, at 4:30 p.m.
